Ankara Agreement

November 4, 2019 72

The Ankara Agreement is an agreement that was made a long time ago between Turkey and the EU. It gives special immigration rights to Turkish nationals in both employment and in running a business.

When the UK joined the EU in 1973 the Ankara Agreement became effective in the UK. Turkish people are able to come to the UK or switch in the UK and acquire an Ankara Agreement businessperson visa, which enables them to set up and run a business or join an already-existing business.

The rules for this are relatively simple, and certainly a lot simpler than the Tier 1 Entrepreneur visa, which is in any case now closed to new entrants. Unlike the Tier 1 Entrepreneur visa there is no specific figure for investment into the business, but the amount held by the applicant must be appropriate for that type of business, whatever it is.

But as the UK looks set to leave the EU some time next year then presumably the Ankara Agreement will finish in the UK. So if you are thinking about applying you may need to seize the opportunity soon.

The rules allow any type of business, as long as it is realistic and viable. You should therefore get a good business plan prepared in support of the application. Dependants are allowed and there is no English language requirement.

After five years’ leave in this category it might be possible to acquire settlement.

Only Turkish nationals are able to apply for this visa, although their dependants can be of any nationality.

At Get UK Visa we can give you detailed advice about this visa route.

Tier 2 skilled worker licence

A lot of restaurants experience difficulties in recruiting skilled chefs. To become a skilled chef in most national cuisines takes a few years’ experience and it is not always easy for restaurant owners to recruit the right people. This is recognised by the Home Office, and they classify skilled chef as a “shortage occupation”. The […]

New Work Visa for international students

In 2012 the Home Office abolished the Tier 1 Post-Study Work visa. This was a visa that enabled international students who had successfully graduated in the UK to stay on in the UK for two years and seek work, and work if they could find it. It was supposed to act as a “bridge” between […]
