A refugee (ie somebody who has successfully claimed asylum) is entitled to apply for a Convention Travel Document. The countries which are parties to the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees – including the UK – are obliged to issue Convention Travel Documents to refugees lawfully resident in their territory. It enables the holder to travel abroad but, for obvious reasons, not to the country from which they sought protection.
Almost all countries in the world will accept a Convention Travel Document as a valid document for travel, but only certain countries will admit the holder visa-free. In many cases they require the holder to also have a visa for travel.
There is no strong pattern to this. Many European countries allow visa-free travel but some of them do not and the majority of countries outside Europe do not either. But, in any case, the rules about this change quite frequently, so it is not possible to compile a useful list of countries that do and countries that do not and there is no official list.
So if you hold a Convention Travel Document and you want to travel to a particular country you need to make enquiries with that country’s embassy to find out whether a visa is required.
At Get UK Visa we have a lot of experience of travel document applications and issues and if you have issues or problems we may be able to help you.

The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is a charge that has to be paid by many visa applicants in addition to the visa application fee, but those in some categories (eg visitors, refugees, EEA nationals, settlement applicants) do not have to pay it. The money goes towards the National Health Service, and is justified by the […]

As everybody knows, EU free movement will end on 31 December 2020, after which EEA nationals will be treated the same as everybody else. There will be a new points-based system, which will cover both working routes and study routes. The Home Office has now provided details about the new study route, which opened on […]

I highly recommend GET the UK Visa, I've selected them for my ILR application as a British Spouse. In the beginning, I was a little bit sceptical and scared. I was coming from an agency where the solicitor did not know anything about the new digital rules, and I was freaking out every time I was talking to this lady. (At that time the digital application was new for me because I made my previous applications in an analogue way and with no solicitor help). Adel and all the team were extremely patient; they listened to us and gave us all the confidence and knowledge to understand all the new digital process. He's been all the time next to us, answering all the questions and doubts. Even if I was having over and over again the same needs and doubts, he was always there. I had our Residency approved on the same day Application. We decided, with no doubt, that he was also going to help us with my citizenship, which I've applied on the 22nd of February 2020. Due to Covid-19, he received my approval letter at the beginning of August 2020. The real date of the approval was the 24th of March 2020. So it means that thanks to Adel, the Home Office approved my citizenship a month after my application!!!!! Thank you very much to Adel and all the team!!
