IHS fee increasing

October 16, 2020 675

The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is a charge that has to be paid by many visa applicants in addition to the visa application fee, but those in some categories (eg visitors, refugees, EEA nationals, settlement applicants) do not have to pay it. The money goes towards the National Health Service, and is justified by the idea that migrants should pay their way for state healthcare. (Actually, many migrants work for a living and in any case pay taxes towards the NHS but they still have to pay the IHS, so they end up paying twice.)

Anyway, the IHS is currently set at £400 per year for most visa applicants so if you are, for example, applying for a three-year visa the surcharge is £1,200. Some categories of applicant, eg students, pay a lower rate of £300 per year.

On 27 October 2020 the IHS rates are increasing. The standard rate will increase to £624 per year, which constitutes a healthy increase of 56%. However, students and those in a few other categories will only have to pay £470.

So this tells us that if you submit your visa application before 27 October you are going to save yourself some money: for most applicants a three-year visa will cost £672 less.

It is important to remember that the “date of application” is the date that the online visa application is submitted, so as long as the online application is submitted on any date before the 27th the lower rate will apply.

If you want to submit your visa application in a hurry we may be able to help you.

Without their help I will probably still be waiting for my husband visa approval. We are definitely pleased and could have not asked for anything more! If you are looking for an affordable and professional lawer, that makes everything run smoothly, then you have found it! I will always recommend GET UK VISA to anyone needing an immigration lawyer.

  • review rating 5  I highly recommend GET the UK Visa, I've selected them for my ILR application as a British Spouse. In the beginning, I was a little bit sceptical and scared. I was coming from an agency where the solicitor did not know anything about the new digital rules, and I was freaking out every time I was talking to this lady. (At that time the digital application was new for me because I made my previous applications in an analogue way and with no solicitor help). Adel and all the team were extremely patient; they listened to us and gave us all the confidence and knowledge to understand all the new digital process. He's been all the time next to us, answering all the questions and doubts. Even if I was having over and over again the same needs and doubts, he was always there. I had our Residency approved on the same day Application. We decided, with no doubt, that he was also going to help us with my citizenship, which I've applied on the 22nd of February 2020. Due to Covid-19, he received my approval letter at the beginning of August 2020. The real date of the approval was the 24th of March 2020. So it means that thanks to Adel, the Home Office approved my citizenship a month after my application!!!!! Thank you very much to Adel and all the team!!
