Tier 5 Government Authorised Exchange Internship Visa

November 4, 2020 1,307

As we all know, European free movement will finish on 31 December 2020, and after that date EEA nationals will be treated the same as everybody else.

The points-based system will carry on but its nomenclature will be changed somewhat. The Tier 2 scheme will be renamed the “Skilled Workers” scheme and the Tier 4 scheme has since October 2020 been renamed the “Student” scheme.

But the Tier 5 Temporary Worker scheme will carry on as before, with no changes in terminology, and the Tier 5 Government Authorised Exchange Internship visa will be much the same as previously.

It seems that this visa is not a great deal known about – either with migrants or employers – but it can be a very good way for a migrant to acquire useful work experience in the UK.

A migrant can apply from either within the UK or from outside the UK for a visa for up to 12 months, if they have managed to find a UK-based employer who wants to offer them an internship – ie a position where you “learn on the job”.

In many cases a student who has graduated in the UK applies to switch their visa to a Tier 5 internship visa, but it is also possible for a suitable migrant (not necessarily a recent graduate) to apply from outside the UK.

Unlike with the Tier 2/Skilled Worker scheme, the employer does not have to sponsor the migrant: the sponsorship is done by a separate sponsoring body, so things are relatively easy for the employer. There is no English language test, and the migrant may bring family members with them.

And, under the new rules starting next year, Tier 5 internship migrants will be able to switch in-country to a Skilled Worker visa if they have been offered a suitable position. This is a new rule and it will make life a lot easier for some.

Tier 5 does not by itself offer a route to settlement, but it can in conjunction with other visas provide a route to settlement via long residence and it can in any case facilitate a route towards Tier 2/Skilled Worker status, which does.

It may be worth your while exploring this visa, especially from 2021. From then on it will provide increased options for finding work and a suitable immigration route in the UK.

We at Get UK Visa will be able to help you with this.

Settlement - days outside the UK

Some readers may be aware of the ten years’ continuous lawful residence route to settlement. This route potentially enables a migrant who has a ten-year immigration history to apply for settlement on that basis. They may have held any types of visa or any combination of visas. One of the immigration rules governing this route […]

Which visas can EEA nationals apply for now

Now that Brexit has been done, free movement is grinding to a halt. EEA nationals who have no previous history in the UK are no longer able to apply for Pre-Settled Status or Settled Status and, if they want to apply to come to the UK, they face the same range of visa options as […]

EEA nationals after Brexit

As we all know, the UK has now left the EU. And, as some of us know, there is currently a transitional period – also known as a “grace period” – for EEA nationals and their family members. EEA nationals and their family members (whether EEA or non-EEA) are and have been able to apply […]

  • review rating 5  My wife’s visa situation was extremely difficult as she came into the UK on a visa waiver, she is from Iran and although I am British, my employment was in China. Adel (the lawyer) was extremely helpful and paid great attention to detail. An example of this is that the pay slips from China were extremely difficult to obtain and when I got them, they were not exactly how they should be. Adel very patiently explained how they should be and ensured that each and every document was at the highest possible standard for the Home Office. My wife was able to get a residence permit and if we had attempted to apply for the visa without the help of GET UK VISA, we would not have had such a positive ending. I truly thank them for all the help and guidance they offered us throughout a very tricky situation which led to the Best possible outcome. Thank you again Adel and GET UK VISA.
